The Art of Conversation
In a society that is becoming high-tech/low-touch, the art of conversation seems to be fading away and Adria Ballester, a 26-year old from Barcelona is working to change that.
In 2017, after a chance encounter with an elderly man, Ballester started to become more and more aware of the importance of talking, especially with those who don’t share our point of view or beliefs. So with just 2 folding chairs and a poster board reading “Free conversations”, Ballester set up what would become the Free Conversations Movement in front of Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf.
Since the movement’s formation, more than 1,400 people have stopped to chat with Adria Ballester. They have shared joyful stories and lots of laughter with him, as well as heartbreaking tales and sombering tears.
Nonstop messages of support have flooded the social media sites and it was this very support that encouraged Ballester to seek international conversation starters.
According to the free conversations movement website, the intent to go international was based on the hope that “in all cities there are spaces where people can express themselves calmly and with the freedom of knowing that they will not be judged”.
On the Free Conversations Movement Facebook page, you can see volunteers using the same simple set up that Ballester started with. These volunteers are in New Delhi, India; Madrid, Spain; Taiwan; Cork, Ireland; just to name a few. Along with images from around the world, you can also read some of the stories that have been shared during the conversations. (Be warned, if you visit this Facebook page, you will lose yourself for hours!)
So whether you are sitting around with family and friends this holiday or have some time, join the worldwide movement in participating in the art of conversation. My guess is you will find the connection and conversation delightful.
Best,
Manal
