When we look at the world and the conflict that is so prevalent in it, the reality comes down to people not being heard and lack of communication skills. So what can we do about it? We can learn the language of communication. Language is one of the most important tools we have in our communication tool library. Language is essential for building the framework of your consciousness. As a society we teach our young children to read and write but we do not teach them how to speak. At middle school age, we start teaching about speaking and listening so it is not surprising that most people communicate at the level of a 12 year old. With this in mind, realize a 12-year old doesn’t have the ability neurologically to experience empathy and compassion. These are communication skills and when they are missing, we can’t relate to how others feel and tell them about our own emotional needs. Perhaps this is why so many young adults get divorced early because they can not perceive emotional expression or hear their feelings through the voice’s tone.
Language Can Shape The World
There are many elements in effective communication besides words, there are facial expressions, intention, listening, hand gestures, body language, eye gaze, tone of voice, etc. The missing link, however, is knowing what words to say to help you get your point across. Remember this as you communicate using words, the brain can typically hang onto only so much information at one time. Generally, people can hold onto 20 to 30 seconds worth of information at any given time. So when you speak and write, try to be really sure people hear the essence of what you are saying in a concise and brief way.
Best,
