How fitting that I read Congressman Lewis’ final words as church bells chimed at the iconic Ebenezer Baptist Church as his funeral began…words of peace…words of love…words of nonviolence. John Lewis called upon all of us to “walk with the wind” – the title of his memoir – and a metaphor that defined his own life’s calling. He admonished us to do…to act…to get in “good trouble, necessary trouble”.
Amidst all the inspiring and stirring words of tribute, there is a beautiful hymn that echoes the words of Micah 6:8…

We are called to act with justice…
We are called to love tenderly…
We are called to serve one another…
To walk humbly with God.

This was John Lewis’ life and lasting legacy. In his honor and memory may we all continue to “walk with the wind” toward justice and truth in love and in peace…everlasting.
